I’m amazed at how little time I have to read print magazines anymore, but one that I really enjoy (and by enjoy, I mean I’ll take it home and read it on a sunny afternoon) is Inc. Each issue usually has several great articles about marketing and communications, and I’ve picked up a few good tips from it.

MarketingSherpa interviewed Athena Schindelheim, assistant editor at Inc., and posted a summary on Friday called PR Interview: How to Get Some Ink in Inc.

A lot of the tips are the standard “don’t call to confirm an email was read,” “know your audience,” etc. MarketingSherpa does share two great tips about getting into the publication:

#1. Don’t peddle your products or services. Inc. is more interested in the ways you provide your goods than in what it is that you offer.
#2. Propose original exclusives. The magazine writes about exclusive content with unique business strategy. They’re always looking for deeper journalism with alternative angles.

Also, there’s a comment at the end about not providing press kits to a publication that honors green companies. At ZoomInfo I’ve eliminated print press kits, even at tradeshows. So far, no reporter has asked for one instead of the online version, but I always wonder if the question is going to come up. Hopefully Inc.’s sentiments represent the industry as a whole.
